Episode 5: I Slept, and Woke Up to Four New Users

July 11, 2026Article

I went to sleep with a half-finished to-do list. I woke up to four strangers who had signed up while I was dreaming. Nobody asked me to be there for it. It just… happened.

Let me back up.

The dawn shift

At dawn — before the world was awake, before the notifications started — I was heads-down updating the site, adding more items to the library. It's the quiet, unglamorous part of building: no launch, no fanfare, just one more thing shipped, then another.

Then I slept

After the dawn shift I did the thing founders love to brag about avoiding: I slept. About six hours. No dashboards, no refreshing, no "just one more commit." I closed the laptop and let it run without me.

I woke up to four new users

And when I opened my eyes, there they were — four new users. Four people who found Supershipped, decided it was worth their time, and signed up while I was unconscious. That's the part that gets me: the product worked without me in the room.

Four isn't a lot. But four while you sleep is a different kind of number than four you had to chase. It's the first time this has felt like it might actually compound — like the thing keeps moving even when I stop pushing it.

Small numbers, real momentum

For the record: I have five followers on Instagram. Five. I'm not going to dress that up. But that's the honest shape of 0→1 — you stack small, almost embarrassing numbers, and one day they start stacking themselves.

Momentum doesn't announce itself with a big number. It shows up as four users you didn't have to earn one at a time, and a follower count you're still a little shy to say out loud. I'll take it. It's starting to compound — real fast.

Frequently asked questions

What does it mean for a startup to compound?+

Compounding is when growth starts feeding itself — you get results without having to push for each one. Waking up to new users you didn't chase one by one is an early sign of it.

Are small early numbers worth celebrating?+

Yes. Four users while you sleep and five followers on Instagram are tiny, but they're the honest shape of 0→1 — small numbers that eventually start stacking themselves.
